Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have become an abstraction increasingly popular in the research community but also in the industry. KGs lay at the center of many applications targeted to scientists as well as to end users (e.g., the Google KG’s now used in several of their applications). A key reason for introducing KGs is to provide an integrated semantic data management layer that makes entities, facts and conceptual models first-class citizens to facilitate and improve other tasks such as search, data analytics, inference and so forth. Open de-facto standards (e.g., RDF, RDFS, OWL) and technologies (triple stores, reasoners, applications) have been defined in the Semantic Web community in cooperation with the W3C consortium, which can be used to model, store, access and process effectively information represented in KGs. In this course, we will use these standards to present models and techniques proposed for KGs and their applications, but we will focus on the principles that lay at the very essence of the KG abstraction with an attention to theory and practice. The course will address theory and practice of KGs with a focus on three main topics: knowledge representation, semantic matching, knowledge exploration. See the program of the course for further details. For each topic, real-world application scenarios will be introduced and used to discuss the technical aspects of the problem. Assessment will be based on individual or group projects discussed during the course.
